This photo of Torphichen Preceptory, West Lothian was taken during April 2014.
Torphichen Preceptory was the Scottish headquarters of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The preceptor for Scotland was based at Torphichen, and the preceptory was founded by David I (1124-53). The church has some fine architecture. Work of the late 1100s survives in the chancel arch (now blocked up). Much of the rest dates from the 1400s, including both transepts. These were built at the direction of Sir Andrew Meldrum, the preceptor, in the 1430s. An inscription recording this survives in the north transept.
